Measuring Your Space

The measurement of your space is critical for the design process. Obtaining a professional measure is recommended.

1.   Measure in inches only, not feet and inches. Measure the overall length and width of your space. Measure the floor to ceiling height.
 
2.   Measure the length of each wall to a window or door opening. Locate the center of the sink/toilet/range from either left or right corner.
 
3.   Measure window and door openings from the trim (casing) around the window/door left side to the outside of the trim (casing) on the right side of the window/door opening.
 
4.   Measurement of appliances: refrigerator, range, microwave. Use whole numbers for the width of these appliances (ie. 30", 36"). Give depth and height for refrigerator and microwave. If this is too difficult, provide the designer with the make and model number for each appliance. Draw this into the floorplan.
 
5.   Now draw in the elevation of all walls. Elevations are what you see when you look directly at a wall in front of you. From floor to ceiling and the entire wall in between.
